Проект Empyrium был основан в 1995 году в Германии Томасом Фойером и Ульрихом Шнайдерманном.
Звуковая палитра группы включает в себя влияние black metal, doom metal, folk, ambient и neo-classic.
В их музыке используются нестандартные инструменты, такие как гусли, флейты и песнопение.
В альбоме «Songs of Moors and Misty Fields» (1998 год), который считается одним из самых значительных в дискографии группы, были использованы духовые инструменты.
В музыке Empyrium можно услышать много элементов народной музыки.

В 2015 году фронтмен группы Empyrium Улрих Бутхёфэль обвинили в том, что он предложил младшей фанке альбома деньги в обмен на поддержку. Эта история вызвала бурные реакции в местной метал-сцене и была освещена в желтой прессе.
